Hans von Storch was until 2015 a director of the Institute of Coastal Research of the Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht near Hamburg, Germany. He is also professor at the University of Hamburg, Germany, and since June 2013 he is guest professor at the Ocean University of China, in Qingdao, which in 2023 was extended for another 3 years . To some extent, he is following the steps of Jürgen Sündermann, who built since the early 1980s steadily contacts with his partners mainly, but not only, at the Ocean University of China, as outlined in the von Storch-and-Li anthology (see below).

The grandparents of Hans von Storch, Eberhard von Werthern and Anni von Viebahn, stayed in Tsinanfu, China, with an English Baptist mission from about 1908 to 1912. The grandfather, Eberhard von Werthern, worked there as a physician - for further sketchy details refer to Shantung - the Sacred Province of China - In some of its aspects compiled and edited by Robert Coventry Forsyth, English Baptist Mission, Shantung, China (Shanghai, Christian Literature Society, 1912;) Two of Hans’ aunts, Gisela and Barbara, were born there in Tsinanfu.
Since 1990 Hans von Storch is married to Jinsong von Storch (徐劲松), who
is a climate scientist at the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg, and a professor at the University of Hamburg.
